Midwifery

Midwives in British Columbia offer primary maternity care grounded in respect, informed choice, and continuity of care.

Regulated by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), midwives in BC provide comprehensive care during pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postpartum period for both parent and newborn.

Midwives in BC are trained to:

• Provide primary care throughout normal pregnancy, labour, birth, and postpartum
• Monitor the health of both parent and baby
• Support physiological birth
• Identify complications and consult or transfer care when needed
• Provide newborn care in the early weeks of life

Our practice follows the midwifery model of care in British Columbia, which is based on:

Continuity of Care

You will be cared for by a solo midwife throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey.

Informed Choice

We provide up-to-date information so you can make decisions that are right for you.

Respect & Autonomy

We honour your values, culture, and preferences in all aspects of care.

Pregnancy & Birth as Normal Life Events

We support pregnancy and birth as normal physiological processes while ensuring safety through clinical monitoring and evidence-based practice.

Collaborative Care

When needed, we consult and collaborate with family physicians, obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals.

Yes. Midwifery services are publicly funded for eligible BC residents.

No referral is required. You can contact us directly. We are happy to take clients at any time during your pregnancy as long as we have availability.

We work closely with specialists and will consult or transfer care when needed to ensure safety.

One of the greatest benefits of midwifery care is building a relationship with the care provider who will support you throughout your journey. Prenatal and postpartum visits are typically longer than many traditional medical appointments, allowing time to discuss your questions, concerns, and goals for your pregnancy and birth experience. Midwifery care continues after birth, with home visits in the early postpartum period and ongoing support for feeding, recovery, newborn care, and adjustment to parenthood.
